FAQs

Where does beef tallow come from?

Tallow is rendered beef fat. At The Talö Company, every product is made from suet — the clean, nutrient-dense fat that sits around a cow's kidneys. We source exclusively from 100% Canadian grass-fed and grass-finished cattle. The suet is slowly rendered, filtered, and whipped in small batches in our Canadian kitchen.

Why this matters: the quality of the pasture the animal grazed on directly affects the vitamin and fatty acid content of the final product. Grass-fed tallow contains significantly more vitamin A, vitamin E, and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than grain-fed tallow.

What's the difference between grass-fed and grain-fed tallow?

Grass-fed tallow is made from cattle that graze on pasture their entire lives (including the finishing phase). It's higher in:

  • Vitamins A, D, E, and K
  • CLA (an anti-inflammatory fatty acid)
  • A better omega-3 to omega-6 ratio

Grain-fed tallow comes from feedlot-raised cattle and is lower in these nutrients and more prone to oxidation. For skincare specifically, grass-fed and finished is the gold standard - and it's the only kind we use.

What are the actual benefits of beef tallow for skin?

Tallow's fatty acid profile (oleic, palmitic, stearic, linoleic acids) closely mirrors the lipids in human sebum, which makes it highly biocompatible with your skin barrier. It's naturally rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K - all fat-soluble, all delivered in a form your skin recognizes.

Common reasons people reach for tallow: deep hydration without clogging, support for dry patches and flaky skin, a comfortable option for sensitive or reactive skin, and a minimal-ingredient alternative to water-and-preservative-based moisturizers.

Note: while tallow has traditional use and emerging research behind it, individual results vary. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, talk to your derm.

Is beef tallow safe during pregnancy?

Yes — pure, grass-fed tallow is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It's a single-ingredient, food-grade fat with no synthetic preservatives, parabens, phthalates, or endocrine disruptors.

The one thing to watch: essential oils added to tallow balms. Some essential oils are not recommended during pregnancy (e.g., rosemary in high concentrations, sage, wintergreen, carrot). If you're pregnant, look for unscented or gently scented products and always double-check the ingredient list. When in doubt, ask your midwife or OB.

At Talö, our CC Cream (Calendula + Chamomile) is formulated to be infant-safe and pregnancy-friendly - it's a good entry point if you're expecting.

Is tallow safe for babies and infants?

Yes, with caveats. Pure tallow salves (like our CC Cream) are infant-safe — babies have historically been soothed with rendered animal fats for diaper rash, cradle cap, eczema, and dry patches. Avoid products with essential oils for babies under 2, and always patch test a small area first.

Will tallow clog my pores / is it comedogenic?

Tallow rates roughly 1-2 out of 5 on the comedogenic scale — considered low-to-moderate. For most people, especially those with dry, sensitive, or normal skin, it does not cause breakouts. For oily, very acne-prone, or cystic-acne-prone skin, start slow: try it on the body first, or use a pea-sized amount on the face a few nights a week before committing fully.

Some dermatologists advise against tallow for acne-prone facial skin specifically. We believe the right moisturizer depends on your skin — and we're always honest that tallow isn't a one-size-fits-all product.

Is tallow good for eczema, rosacea, or sensitive skin?

This is where tallow tends to shine. The fatty acid and CLA content supports the skin barrier, which is the underlying issue in most eczema and rosacea flares. Many Talö customers reach for us specifically because every other "clean" moisturizer made their skin worse.

That said — eczema and rosacea are medical conditions. Tallow is not a cure, and it is not a replacement for prescribed topical treatments. Think of it as a barrier-supportive daily moisturizer, not a medication.

How do I actually apply tallow skincare?

Three rules make all the difference:

  1. Use a pea-sized amount. Tallow is concentrated. Less is more.
  2. Warm it between your fingertips first. Rub the tiny amount together until it melts into an oil.
  3. Apply to clean, slightly damp skin. The thin film of water helps it absorb in seconds rather than sitting on top.

For face: apply after cleansing (morning and/or night). For body: apply after a shower while skin is still slightly damp.

How long does tallow skincare last once I open it?

Our products are shelf-stable thanks to tallow's naturally high vitamin E content. General guideline:

  • Unopened: up to 12 months stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Opened, daily use: 6–9 months.
  • If refrigerated: can extend to 12+ months.

If a product ever smells rancid, off, or strongly "beefy," that's a sign oxidation has occurred - discard it.

How should I store my Talö products?

Cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight. Bathroom shelves are fine; tropical windowsills are not. In summer heat or a warm bathroom, the product may soften or melt - this is normal and doesn't affect efficacy. Pop it in the fridge for 10 minutes to re-firm.

Tip: scoop product out with a clean, dry finger or small spatula. Double-dipping with wet fingers introduces water and shortens shelf life. (whenever water is present without a preservative, it creates a breeding ground for bacteria)

How long does one jar last?

With daily use as a face moisturizer, a 1 oz (30 ml) jar typically lasts 4–8 weeks, and a 2 oz (60 ml) jar lasts 2–3 months. Body butters used head-to-toe are more like 4–6 weeks depending on how much skin you're covering.

Does it smell like meat?

Nope. Properly rendered grass-fed suet has a very faint, slightly sweet, earthy note at most. Any botanical oils we add (frankincense, vanilla, rosemary, etc.) are what you'll actually smell.

Can I use tallow under makeup?

Absolutely, but wait 5–10 minutes after application for full absorption. Because tallow is a true occlusive emollient, applying makeup on top too quickly can feel slippery. A pea-sized amount, well-pressed into damp skin, creates a beautiful base for makeup once absorbed.
